The Optical Chain Store Myth

 Why Are You Paying Twice
As Much For Your Eyewear?

Before you purchase eye glasses think about these three issues:
  1. Fashion - the glasses should add rather than detract from your face
  2. Value - you should purchase them at a fair price
  3. Quality - they should do what the doctor designed them to do
Fashion is what TV ads claim you will find at the big branded optical chains.  You know thes chain store names almost as well as the fast food stores.  Do they have more fashionable eyewear?  As it turns out,  many local optometrists and opticians carry more fashionable brands then the "big" chain stores.  But here is the secret,   it is not the number of frames but the people who help you find the right one for you!  If the frame stylist knows your "colors"  they will help you find a flattering frame and if they understand your facial contours they will help you find an uplifting shape.  The Chain Stores usually hire less knowledgeable kids,  like the the burger joints do because they work cheaply.  Even if these employees let you find a frame you think is flattering,  they often have no idea if it will work optically for your prescription.  This is a very important consideration!

Value is price plus quality.   On TV you see ads screaming lenses at Half Price,  with this coupon. Is this a real value?  AARP is guilty of allowing numerous deceitful ads of this nature. Lets look at this for just a moment and clear away the smoke and mirrors.   We priced Varilux Brand Progressive lenses at Lens Crunchers (name changed to avoid suits) and Holistic Vision Care in Brewster NY.  Lets compare below:
  1. Lens Crunchers --  $410.00
  2. Holistic Visions  --  $210.00
Can this be true?  Click Here for he whole comparison and then do some phone calls on your own. It is important to compare Name Brands because we can all buy "generic" progressive lenses and sell them cheaply.  The trouble with generics is that you NEVER see well with them as they have small reading areas and lots of distortion (Now you know why you never go used to those progressive lenses you bough right!)  Do you now understand why that Half Price coupon is no savings!  That's right after a Half Price Discount at Lens Crunchers it is just getting near prices at Holistic Vision Care.  On the other hand,  add in their frame fee and you still lose!

Quality -  who makes your glasses determines quality.  Lens Crunchers (and some other chains) make glasses in their small in office lab.  They rush them through in what often is not the promised hour.   Every day we see people who suffer headaches and blurred vision just because their glasses were made wrong.  Think you can tell if they are wrong or right?
